There are generally two types of paternity testing:

  • Private Test – A quick, economical solution for families seeking the truth regarding paternity for personal information. Evidence can be gathered and submitted by anyone, and does not require a Chain of Custody process. Ideal for adult children wanting verification and parents who want answers prior to incurring expensive legal bills.

  • Legal Test – A conclusive, legally-binding test which requires that DNA samples be collected by a neutral third party (ministers, attorneys, physicians, etc.) and documented through a legal Chain of Custody process. Legal paternity tests are used for situations such as child support/custody disputes, inheritance determination, immigration issues and more.

When an alleged father is not available, paternity can also be established indirectly by testing known family members. If you are submitting a sample for a private paternity test, there are a number of places you can find forensic DNA evidence:​​
 

  • Post-mortem tissue

  • Lickable stamps or envelopes

  • Toothbrushes or toothpicks

  • Cigarette butts

  • Dental floss

  • Facial tissue or cotton swabs.
